Mercedes-Benz Key Fob Battery Replacement Starts With the Exact Fob

Do not buy a battery based only on “Mercedes key fob.” Mercedes-Benz keys differ by model and generation, and SmartKeys do not all use the same cell.

For example, the official 2024 CLE Coupé manual specifies one CR2032 3 V cell, while the official 2012 C-Class W204 manual specifies one CR2025 3 V cell. Both instruct the owner to install the positive side facing upward (2024 CLE manual; 2012 C-Class manual). Simple online rules such as “old key equals CR2025” or “chrome key equals CR2032” are therefore not dependable enough.

Find the correct Mercedes key battery first

Use this order:

1. Check the owner’s manual for the exact model and model year. Mercedes-Benz provides a German online manual selector. Search the key section for Batterie des Schlüssels wechseln.
2. Read the complete code on the installed cell when the compartment is open. Photograph both the code and its orientation before removal.
3. Check how many cells the tray actually contains. Do not assume one or two from the fob’s color, panic-button shape or a generic compatibility list.

CR2025 and CR2032 cells are both 20 mm across, but they differ in thickness: the final digits indicate 2.5 mm and 3.2 mm respectively. The German Federal Institute for Risk Assessment explains this IEC numbering convention (BfR). A cell that appears to fit is not necessarily the specified cell.

How to replace the battery in a common current Mercedes key

The following method matches the key documented for the 2024 CLE Coupé and 2022 S-Class W223. Check your own manual before applying it to another model.

1. Work over a clear table and remove the emergency mechanical key using the release button.
2. Press the mechanical key into the opening in the fob until the outer rear cover opens. Do not hold the cover shut while pressing.
3. Insert the mechanical key into the exposed opening, lift the inner battery cover and remove it.
4. Tap the fob gently against your palm until the old cell drops out. This avoids levering against the electronics or contacts.
5. Fit the specified new cell with the positive (+) side upward, handling it with a clean, lint-free cloth. Keep the cell and contacts free of grease and debris.
6. Engage the front tabs of the inner cover and press both sides closed. Refit the outer cover in the same way, checking that both are fully seated.
7. Reinsert the mechanical key and test lock, unlock and boot-release functions beside the vehicle.

These steps and the CR2032 specification appear in both Mercedes-Benz manuals (CLE Coupé; S-Class W223).

An older tray-style SmartKey is slightly different

On the 2012 C-Class W204 key, Mercedes-Benz instructs the owner to:

1. Remove the mechanical key.
2. Press it into the fob opening until the battery-tray cover releases.
3. Remove the cover and tap the SmartKey against the palm so the battery falls out.
4. Insert the specified CR2025 with its positive side upward.
5. Refit the tray cover and mechanical key, then test every button.

That procedure comes from the official 2012 C-Class manual. Other older Mercedes cars and vans can have different trays or cell counts, so treat it as W204-specific rather than a universal “old SmartKey” method.

If the fob still does not work

Neither cited Mercedes-Benz procedure instructs the owner to reprogram the key after an ordinary battery change. Before assuming the key has lost its coding:

• verify that the cell code matches the manual and old battery;
• check that the positive side faces the documented direction;
• try a newly opened, undamaged cell;
• make sure the covers are fully closed and no contact has been bent;
• test the spare key, if available;
• move away from possible radio interference and test again.

The 2012 W204 also has a battery-check lamp: pressing lock or unlock should make it illuminate briefly. If it does not, the manual treats the battery as discharged. Mercedes manuals list a weak battery, radio interference and a faulty key as separate possibilities, so a fresh battery will not cure every failure.

If the battery is dead away from home, the emergency procedure also varies. A current CLE can recognize the key at a marked location in the center console, whereas the older W204 manual directs the driver to use the ignition slot in relevant KEYLESS-GO fault conditions. Follow the emergency-start section for the exact vehicle rather than forcing the fob or dismantling it further.

Handle and discard the coin cell safely in Germany

Keep both new and apparently flat coin cells away from children. If a child may have swallowed one, the BfR advises going immediately to a children’s hospital or emergency department; severe injury can occur before obvious symptoms appear (BfR).

Do not put the old cell in household waste. In Germany, portable waste batteries can be returned free of charge to retailers or municipal facilities such as recycling centers, according to the Federal Ministry for the Environment.
