Which Engine Oil Does Your BMW X5 Need?

Find the right BMW X5 engine oil by engine, build date and BMW Longlife approval, with handbook examples and top-up guidance.

There is no single recommended engine oil for every BMW X5. Choose oil that matches both the BMW Longlife specification and the SAE viscosity permitted for your exact engine and vehicle. A bottle marked “5W-30,” “fully synthetic” or “for BMW” is not enough: BMW’s X5 handbooks specify oil approvals as well as viscosity classes, and those requirements change between editions.

For an X5 in Germany, start with its vehicle-specific handbook—not a general US-market oil chart or the recommendation for another X5 with a similar badge.

Find your X5’s oil specification

BMW Germany provides model-specific instructions through the car’s integrated handbook, the BMW Driver’s Guide app and its online Driver’s Guide. Its FAQ also explains how to download or print the handbook. BMW’s handbook access instructions

Before buying, record:

  • Your VIN, build date and exact engine variant, including petrol, diesel or plug-in hybrid.
  • The permitted BMW Longlife approval, including any suffix such as FE+ or FE++.
  • The permitted SAE grade, such as 5W-30, 0W-30 or 0W-20.
  • Whether you need a top-up or a complete oil change.

Search the German handbook for “Motorölsorten zum Nachfüllen” and “Viskositätsklassen.” For a complete service, ask a BMW partner or qualified workshop to confirm the current oil specification and refill quantity against your VIN.

Why “all X5s use 5W-30” is unreliable

These handbook examples show the difference. They describe topping-up permissions, not a universal oil-change prescription. The copies linked here are hosted by third-party sites; use your own vehicle’s handbook to make the final choice.

Handbook example What its top-up section says
2021 X5, German-language handbook, edition X/20: diesel engines Lists BMW Longlife-04 and Longlife-12 FE, but excludes Longlife-12 FE for the listed 25d, 35d, 40d and 50d engines. Its viscosity section excludes 0W-20 and 5W-20 for diesels.
2024 X5, European English-language handbook, edition II/23: diesel engines Lists BMW Longlife-12 FE and Longlife-17 FE+, with diesel viscosity classes 0W-20 and 0W-30.

Petrol requirements also differ. The 2021 handbook lists Longlife-04, Longlife-12 FE and Longlife-17 FE+, but excludes Longlife-17 FE+ for the listed 50i engine. The 2024 edition lists Longlife-12 FE, Longlife-17 FE+, Longlife-19 FE and Longlife-22 FE++, but excludes Longlife-22 FE++ for the listed 60i engine. It also excludes 0W-12 and 0W-20 for that engine. Do not treat these approvals as interchangeable or combine any listed viscosity with any listed approval without checking your car’s instructions. 2021 handbook; 2024 handbook

What to check on the bottle in Germany

Look for “Freigaben” or “Specifications and approvals”, then match the complete BMW designation. SAE describes viscosity; manufacturer approvals address additional requirements. ADAC advises following the vehicle manufacturer’s approvals and recommendations, normally found in the handbook. ADAC’s oil-specification guide

For example, Mobil 1 ESP 5W-30 lists BMW Longlife-04 under its approvals on Mobil’s German product page, checked on 14 October 2026. That makes it an option to consider only where your X5 permits both Longlife-04 and 5W-30—not a recommendation for every X5. Check the bottle you actually buy against the current product information. Top-up quantity is not oil-change capacity

For the 2024 handbook example, BMW says to add oil only when prompted, using the quantity shown in the message. Stop safely and switch off drive-ready state before filling. Do not overfill or add aftermarket oil additives. Its alternative-oil allowance is limited to specified oil specifications and permitted viscosities, and up to one litre when suitable oil is unavailable; it is not permission to fill the whole engine with a substitute.
