Find Your X3’s Due Work Before Booking a Workshop
Use your X3’s service display and vehicle-specific manual to identify due work, separate brake wear from servicing, and request a clear German workshop quote.

BMW X3 maintenance should follow your car’s service display, vehicle-specific manual and service history—not a universal mileage chart. Older X3s can use an Oil Service/Inspection reminder; newer cars use Condition Based Service (CBS). The newer manual warns that maintenance scopes and intervals vary by country version, so a US schedule does not automatically apply to a German-market X3. (2007 X3 manual, pp. 46 and 102; newer X3 maintenance chapter)
Choose the proposed work and what your service record shows; use the result to check the workshop’s scope.
Check the Proposed Work
For wear, tyres and HU, the service reminder alone does not establish the requirement.
Requirement unconfirmed
Verify the Due Items First
Check your X3’s display, VIN-specific manual and service history. There is no universal German X3 mileage schedule established here.
Ask the workshop: Which items are due for my VIN, and what establishes each requirement?

Find the Service Reminder for Your X3
Before booking, collect the VIN, engine designation, current kilometres and service history. Record every displayed service item, including its date or remaining distance.
These menu examples come from English-language manuals with North American market content. Use them to locate the reminder, not to set German service intervals. Wording can differ by language and software version.
| Manual Example | Where to Look | What to Record |
|---|---|---|
| 2007 X3 | Instrument cluster, ignition key in position 1 or after starting | OIL SERVICE or INSPECTION and remaining distance |
| 2013 X3 | Vehicle Info → Vehicle status → Service required | Details within each entry |
| Newer manual hosted as 2024–2025 | Apps → Vehicle → Vehicle status → Service | Each maintenance or inspection entry |
The 2007 manual describes engine-oil service and Inspections I and II. Do not assume a modern iDrive procedure applies to that car. The later menu examples are documented in the 2013 service display instructions and the newer service menu, p. 151.
For supported cars, entering the VIN into the BMW Driver’s Guide app provides vehicle-specific information. BMW Germany describes the app as supplementary: after a vehicle software update, the integrated manual contains the latest information. Use that distinction when an app screenshot and the car’s instructions disagree. (BMW Germany’s Driver’s Guide guidance)
Convert the Reminder Into an Itemised Work List
CBS uses sensors and algorithms that account for operating conditions to determine maintenance recommendations. It is not simply a fixed kilometre counter. The displayed requirement and the applicable maintenance information should establish the work due for your particular car.
For combustion-engine cars, BMW Germany lists the following regular maintenance categories within its Service Inclusive scope:
| Maintenance Category | Application |
|---|---|
| Engine-oil service | Combustion engines |
| Brake-fluid service | Applicable service requirement |
| Vehicle check | To BMW specifications |
| Engine air filter and cabin microfilter | Applicable service requirement |
| Fuel filter | Diesel engines |
| Spark plugs | Petrol engines |
This is a list of possible work, not a requirement to replace every item at every visit. Ask the workshop which items are due for your VIN and how it established that requirement. Fully electric cars have a separate service scope; the engine-related items do not apply to them. (BMW Germany’s Service Inclusive scope)
Keep the quote’s categories separate. Scheduled maintenance is work required by the service system and vehicle-specific maintenance information. Wear repairs or faults need an inspection or diagnosis supporting the proposed repair. Optional preventive work needs a reason for replacing something earlier or adding work beyond the due service.
A workshop recommendation can therefore be reasonable without being scheduled maintenance—but it should be labelled and explained rather than folded into a vague “service” total.
Separate Brake Wear and Drivetrain Work From Routine Service
Brake-fluid replacement is not the same job as replacing pads and discs. BMW lists worn pads and discs as additional benefits of Service Inclusive Plus, rather than the regular Service Inclusive scope. Check your actual contract before assuming that a service package covers brake wear. (BMW Germany’s Plus coverage)
For a brake-wear proposal, ask what inspection supports replacement and which parts the quote includes. A brake-fluid reminder alone does not establish that pads or discs need replacing.
For gearbox, differential or transfer-case servicing, request the applicable component-specific guidance, fluid specification and reason for the proposed interval. Do not approve a generic “X3 drivetrain service” without a defined scope. The manuals and service information cited here do not establish one universal drivetrain-service interval for every X3.
Check Tyre Fitment Before Approving Rotation
A routine “rotate tyres” line can be unsuitable for your X3. The newer manual expressly prohibits front-to-rear rotation when the axles have different tyre or rim sizes. It also recommends tyres of the same make and tread design. Have the workshop check the approved combination before replacing or moving tyres.
Before a long drive, check cold tyre pressures against your car’s specification for the fitted tyres and intended load and speed. Do not copy a pressure from another X3 with a different wheel size. Both points are covered in the newer X3 wheels and tyres chapter, including pp. 339–340.
Keep Germany’s HU Deadline Separate
For a normally privately used, German-registered passenger car, the first Hauptuntersuchung (HU) is due 36 months after first registration, then every 24 months. Those intervals are not a rule for every vehicle use or registration category.
Confirm your deadline from the inspection report, registration document or rear number-plate sticker. The dashboard reminder is not the definitive record. HU is separate from BMW maintenance, even if a workshop arranges both during one visit. (TÜV SÜD’s deadlines and document guidance)
Request a Written Quote With Separate Totals
Ask for a written quote separating due servicing, wear repairs, diagnostics and optional work. It should identify parts, oil quantities, labour and fees, with the total including VAT. Agree a spending ceiling and require approval before additional work. ADAC recommends recording workshop agreements in writing. (ADAC’s workshop advice)
There is no X3-specific maintenance price figure in the evidence used here. Use our BMW maintenance-cost examples in Germany as comparison context, not an X3 tariff. A useful comparison needs the same work scope, not just two prices both labelled “service”.
At collection, retain the itemised invoice and ask which completed services were documented and which reminders were reset. Keep that record with the vehicle-specific maintenance information for the next booking.
