Useful hints and tips for travelers in Germany
During the last weekend of June, as every year, on the banks of the river Elbe near Dresden, in the section between Loschwitz and Pillnitz, takes place Elbhangfest. Over 200 events of music, theater, cultural debates and markets, in the background of the magnificent hills that border the great river.
The landscape between Loschwitz and Pillnitz is one of the most impressive along the river Elbe. Within meadows, hills and vineyards rise small and tiny old villages characterized by a distinctive architecture of the Wilhelmine era. The original idea of the river festival dates back to 300 years ago, when Augustus the Strong ordered his foreman to enlarge the manor of Pillnitz turning it into a sumptuous castle.
In the second half of 1800 German poets and artists discovered this corner of earth and began to pay homage to it, making it known to the general public. The Elbhangfest has become a tradition since 1990 and involves the inhabitants of nearby Dresden and many tourists coming from all over Europe.
In the three days of the festival, which are repeated every year in late June, the area between Loschwitz and Pillnitz becomes a huge amusement park, with attractions for adults and children, with more than 200 events taking place in an area of no more than seven kilometers, on the banks of the river.
The arts festival organized by local citizens and cultural associations of Dresden offers a rich program of concerts (from the recorder to hard rock), theater and dance, comedy and lots of events for children. You will enjoy many markets of handicrafts, antiques and of course food stalls with specialties from Saxony. A grand costume parade opens the festival, a popping fireworks show closes it.
