Oktoberfest Faq. 10 questions about Oktoberfest

The visit to Oktoberfest should be programmed in advance. To enjoy the party and to dispose of excess, in fact, you have to book a hotel as well as a table at the stalls. If you don’t book, you will remain standing and cannot drink. The following ten tips are to help you to make the most of your Oktoberfest experience.

Where is the Oktoberfest?
The Oktoberfest takes place on a lawn (Wies, hence the welcome message ‘Willkommen auf der Wiesn’) called Theresienwiese. It is located in the south-west of Munich.

How did the tradition of Oktoberfest start?
On the great lawn of Teresienwiese, between October 12 and 17, 1810, there was a big party for the marriage of Prince Ludwig I of Bavaria and Princess Therese of Saxony-Hildburghausen. Since then, every year this great event is repeated. Only since the beginning of 1900, however, they started serving beer and once there was no Luna Park, although horse races were held.

How to get to the Oktoberfest?

The most ‘cunning’ mean of transport is the train: the Central Station of Munich, Hauptbahnhof, is a ten minute walk away. For those who stay in Munich, the closest metro station to the Feast is just Theresienwiese, lines U4 and U5. Anyway, near the festival there are very large car parks.

What are the Festhalle?
The Festhalle are the large covered pavilions. Inside there are hundreds of tables to sit and drink beer and eat traditional Bavarian dishes: roasted chicken, sausage and pork. The Festhalle are operated by the producers of beer: Augustiner, Hacker-Pschorr, Hofbräu, Löwenbräu, Paulaner and Spaten. Some Festhalle can host up to 10 000 people.

How do you drink beer?
The jug standard is the one-liter and costs approximately 10 €. To drink you have to be seated. To sit down you need to arrive early and find a place, or book by telephone. If you are standing up you cannot drink.

What is forbidden at the Oktoberfest?
Since 2010 it is absolutely prohibited to smoke inside the Festhalle. At the tables it is forbidden to eat food brought from outside, you can only eat what you order along with the beer. It is advisable not to overdo it: the police and the staff are fairly tolerant, but excesses are not allowed. You may not take children after a certain time.

Are children welcome?
Absolutely, also because in the Luna Park there are plenty of attractions devoted to them. Tuesday is the Family Day, with various discounts. Children under six can stay in the Festhalle up to 8.00 pm. The Wiesn-Hits für Kids is a brochure, with all the practical tips to better enjoy the feast in the company of children and adolescents.

Where to stay during the Oktoberfest?
Munich is a city with a large availability of accommodation, with many hotels and B & B. Even around the lawn of the party, in the Theresienwiese area or near the central station there are many hotels, but of course advanced booking is mandatory. There are also several campgrounds and hostels.

Is it worth going to Oktoberfest to go to the Luna Park?
Absolutely. Every year the Oktoberfest Luna Park offers new attractions to enjoy always different experiences. The advice is of course to go to the Luna Park before having drunk and eaten. Within the space of the Luna Park there are many restaurants and places to eat and drink.

Some helpful advice for the Oktoberfest?
If you are driving, do not forget where you parked. Drink all you want, but don’t get too much drunk. Remember to take home a Maß (a mug) as a souvenir. Remember to book if you want to sit inside the Festhalle in peace, to enjoy the evening without having to wait at the entrance of the halls.
