Germany’s Military History Museum reopens in Dresden

At the beginning of 2011, the New York Times made a list of twenty places not to be missed during the year. Among them, there was Dresden, for the lively architectural and cultural activity that is pervading the city in recent years, but especially for the reopening of Mhm, Militärhistorisches Museums, which is considered the third most important museum complex on national history after the House of history in Bonn (Haus der Geschichte der Bundesrepublik Deutschland) and the German Historical Museum in Berlin (Deutsches Historical Museum.)

Christmas in Germany. The German version of Italian Panettone: Stollen

The Christstollen, or more commonly known as Stollen, is the traditional German Christmas cake. It was first made in Dresden, in the XIV century, but today it has become a tradition throughout Germany, although some local variations have been introduced. As the Milanese Panettone, this is a cake based on sweet yeast dough, containing lots of butter, dried fruit (especially almonds), candied fruit, raisins, and candied citron and orange peels.

From November 29 to December 4, in Tübingen, Baden-Württemberg region, Germany’s the most important chocolate festival will take place, one of the most prestigious in the world. It is ChocolArt, which will see master chocolatiers from five continents, competing to achieve the best cocoa-based products: more than 200 thousand visitors of ChocolArt will be judging the artworks prepared during the festival. Africa, South and North America, Europe, Asia: about a hundred master chocolatiers will meet in Tübingen for ChocolArt, in the setting of the beautiful city of Baden-Württemberg region, Germany.

From November 23 until December 31, in the large Theresienwiese lawn of Munich, which already hosts the Oktoberfest, will be held a wonderful event that is very limiting to call a “Christmas Market.” Indeed, in addition to the classic wooden houses and stalls where all the objects of the Christmas tradition are sold, the Winter Festival Tollwood will also include numerous artistic performances, theater and circus, concerts and the chance to taste the wine & food products from all around Europe.

Castles in Bavaria: Neuschwanstein and the Sleeping Beauty

In comparison, Harry Potter’s Hogwarts castle seems a prison of the Inquisition. Yes, because thinking of the castles you see in fairytales, those with a happy ending, laces and hearts, you can only imagine the Neuschwanstein castle, a symbol of Bavaria. And although it seems so ancient, the Neuschwanstein Castle is only about 140 years old. Standing on a rock not far from Füssen, its construction begun in 1869 and was never completed; it was built by Ludwig II – as a result of one of his fickle dreams – who was a King loved by his subjects and hated from German political and economic parties.
