The lawn of Theresienwiese, over which the great event of the Oktoberfest takes place, lies in the south-west of Munich. The place is easy to find: the problem comes later, when you want to leave after several pitchers of beer. It is therefore strongly recommended to reach the beer stands and the funfair by public transport, so you won’t have trouble returning to the hotel. The faster way, is taking the underground lines U4 and U5, to Theresienwiese stop.
The Oktoberfest takes place on a lawn (Wais, hence the welcome message ‘Willkommen auf der Wiesn‘) that has a name: Theresienwiese.
On that field, between 12 and 17 October 1810 there was a big party, considered the first Oktoberfest, on the occasion of the wedding of Prince Ludwig I of Bavaria and Princess Therese of Saxony-Hildburghausen, who gave her name to that place . It was a grand celebration, with horse races and the participation of many people from Bavaria.
