The Festival of Lights in Berlin is now at its seventh edition. For ten days the major palaces, tourist centers, and religious institutions of the city will be decorated with thousands of colored lights set up by internationally renowned artists. This is the greatest show of lights and lighting in the world, and attracts millions of tourists from all over Germany and Europe.

Zwiebelmarkt, the onion market, is a great event held in Weimar, Thuringia, Germany, since 1635. In the three days of the Zwiebelmarkt, the city is filled with the flavor of onions and many agricultural products are exhibited and sold in hundreds of stalls in the main squares of the city. More than 350 000 tourists flock to Weimar every year to attend the Onion Festival: a great number of people considering that the city has just over 65 000 inhabitants.

Last year there were over 40 thousand participants in the Berlin Marathon, a spectacular route of about 42 kilometers that winds through the historical centre of the city. The Berlin Marathon is part of the World Marathon Majors circuit, which involves the cities of Boston, Chicago, London and New York City.

Not only Munich has an Oktoberfest. Even in Stuttgart, since 1816, in early October is held a beer festival of all respect. Actually, there’s who appreciates it more than the one in Munich: less chaotic, less touristy and more traditional. This is Cannstatter Volksfest, held in the district of Bad Cannstatt in Stuttgart.

This is one of the oldest festivals in Europe, nearly a thousand years old, and takes place in Bremen in mid-October. The Bremen Freimarkt Fair, 14 days of collective madness, between markets, amusement parks, food, parades with floats and parties lasting from morning to evening. The reason for this spree?

We had already mentioned it, but the appointment is renewed. In the gardens of Herrenhausen in Hanover on the 10th and on the 24th of September will be held the last stages of the fireworks competition, which involves opposing national teams of Sweden, France, Spain, Austria and Mexico. On the 10th it is the Austrian national team’s turn and on the 24th it will be the Mexican’s.

For over 30 years in Stuttgart, at the end of August, wine is celebrated with an important colorful and festive event. In the central square, the Schlossplatz, and in the Schlossgarten, dozens of food and wine stands are set up where you can sample local wines such as Riesling, Schillerwein and Trollinger.

The large bay of Rostock on the Baltic Sea becomes the scene of an exceptional event in mid-August. For four days the waters of the port will be the setting for a gathering of sailboats of all kinds, but especially historic tall ships, museum and vintage boats, which will get back to the sea to delight over a million visitors.
