In the centre of the Ruhr area, one of the most populous metropolitan areas across Europe, Essen has experienced as a protagonist the period of the Industrial Revolution, from the extraction of coal to steel production, under the auspices of the Krupp family. In the last twenty years, the relative decline of its industrial vocation, has made Essen one of Germany’s most important cultural and exhibition hubs. Culture revolves around the Colosseum Theater in Altendorfer Strasse, which offers a rich calendar of events. The business and service sectors mainly focus around Messe Essen, a 110 square meters exhibition center which hosts 50 events every year, of which around 15 have an international dimension.
