Berlinale 2012: Berlin International Film festival

Since 1950, Berlin is home to one of the leading Film festivals worldwide, Berlinale. For two weeks, the city will be fully involved in this event attracting some 20 000 professionals of the film industry and more than 4 000 critics and journalists. For this year’s edition, more than 200 000 tickets will be available for the vision of hundreds of films in competition. Berlinale will run from February 9 to 19: one of the highlights of the event is on Feb14th, with a screening of the film ‘The Iron Lady’, in which Meryl Streep plays Margaret Thatcher. The great actress, born in Summit, New Jersey (USA), will be awarded the Honorary Golden Bear for Lifetime Achievement.

From December 8 to 11 in Berlin, at the Great Exhibition grounds in Messedamm 22, will take place Hippologica, the most important international trade event dedicated to equestrian sports. The exhibition halls will exhibit products and services for the industry, sport equipment, but also accessories for breeding and for horses’ health. As always, during Hippologica, will be organized many events, contests, tournaments, competitions and both professional and amateur presentations, open to the general public.

The tradition of Christmas markets in Germany is very much alive. The ancient medieval cities, with their historic squares, the imposing gothic churches, the monuments that recall an significant and glorious past, are the perfect scenario for a period of celebration, lights and colors, which introduces to the upcoming Christmas. There are hundreds of Christmas markets in Germany; in all major and small towns, from north to south, the Weihnachtsmarkt are prepared according to different variations for each region, with craft and food specialties, different customs and specific traditions. October 8-9 in Berlin: NUMISMATA, the International Coin Fair

At the Exhibition Center of Berlin, on October 8 and 9 there will be the 13th edition of NUMISMATA, International Coin Fair, a leading event for coin collectors. As stated in the press release presenting the event, NUMISMATA is a response to the crisis and global recession: indeed, for two days the dark clouds of financial crisis that pervade Europe and the world are driven away by the presence of unique and rare numismatic pieces, with continuous transactions between exhibitors (all spaces have been occupied by hundreds of stands) and visitors, in an event that combines culture, history and business. At the same time, still at the Exhibition Center at the foot of the Radio tower, will be held the International Stamp Fair Berlin, dedicated to stamps.

The Festival of Lights in Berlin is now at its seventh edition. For ten days the major palaces, tourist centers, and religious institutions of the city will be decorated with thousands of colored lights set up by internationally renowned artists. This is the greatest show of lights and lighting in the world, and attracts millions of tourists from all over Germany and Europe.

September 25th: around Berlin, but on the run. It’s Marathon time

Last year there were over 40 thousand participants in the Berlin Marathon, a spectacular route of about 42 kilometers that winds through the historical centre of the city. The Berlin Marathon is part of the World Marathon Majors circuit, which involves the cities of Boston, Chicago, London and New York City.

The Renaissance Faces, Gesichter der Renaissance, is the title of the exhibition that you can admire at the Bode Museum in Berlin from August 25th to November 20th, in collaboration with the Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York. The Bode Museum is located on the Museums Island, Museumsinsel, which is to the north of River Spree.
