Useful hints and tips for travelers in Germany
In the centre of the Ruhr area, one of the most populous metropolitan areas across Europe, Essen has experienced as a protagonist the period of the Industrial Revolution, from the extraction of coal to steel production, under the auspices of the Krupp family. In the last twenty years, the relative decline of its industrial vocation, has made Essen one of Germany’s most important cultural and exhibition hubs. Culture revolves around the Colosseum Theater in Altendorfer Strasse, which offers a rich calendar of events. The business and service sectors mainly focus around Messe Essen, a 110 square meters exhibition center which hosts 50 events every year, of which around 15 have an international dimension.
Between February and March, several Trade Fairs will be held at Messe Essen, and there’s no lack of evening appointments to relax after a stressful working day.
Prior to providing a list of the major exhibitions and evening happenings, here is a short briefing on Essen’s most interesting landmarks. Don’t miss the Zollverein industrial complex, a disused mining center converted for cultural purposes. Other historic buildings include Villa Hugel, an Art Nouveau building dating back to the XIX century and belonging to the Krupp Family, now used for exhibitions and concerts. Among the religious monuments, worth a mention: the cathedral – including all of the works of art it holds, and the Alte Synagoge, the largest center of Jewish worship in Europe. Finally, a must-visit is Limbecker Platz, one of the largest shopping malls in the country.
