Anuga – October 8-12: the agri-food show in Cologne

The food and beverage sector is presented in all its complexity during Anuga, a trade fair that will take place in Cologne, and for which are expected more than 6,500 exhibitors from over 90 countries. This is a momentous occasion for the agri-food sector, on a European and global level, for all companies, suppliers, universities and research centers working in this field.

In the 2010 edition of Anuga, visitors were over 150 thousand: they have contacted exhibitors and participated in events and debates on development and production, technologies and materials. There have been over 160 000 participants and a good 20% increase is expected for this edition. In 2011, space will be given to the consumer market with the sections Anuga FoodService and Anuga Chilled & Fresh Food. The fair, says Peter Grothues, Vice President Food, Technology & Environment at Koelnmesse “always shows its ability to change in tune with market changes.”

Anuga will be divided into several agri-food areas:
Fine Food: delicatessen, gourmet food and ingredients
Drinks and beverages: non-alcoholic beverages and trend drinks
Chilled &Fresh Food: ready meals, delicatessen and fish
Meat: meat and cold cuts
Frozen Food: Frozen and iced foods
Dairy: ice cream and dairy products
Bread & Bakery, Hot Beverages: bread, baked goods, spreads and hot beverages
Organic: organic products
RetailTec: presentation of technologies and services for distribution
The new FoodService section, presenting technologies, ideas and services for the food service, catering and cash & carry

During the fair, gastronomic events will be promoted by associations of hoteliers and restaurateurs, while within Anuga FoodService will take place the competition between Germany, Austria and Switzerland to vote “The Chef of the Year”.

For the after-show, nearby the many hotels in downtown Cologne, you can dine at several fine restaurants. These include the Brauerei Päffgen in Friesenstraße, serving Goulash specialties and traditional cuisine, the Brauhaus Papa Joe’s Biersalon with live music or Brauhaus Sion in Unter Taschenmacher, considered one of the top ten restaurants in Cologne. Also very popular are the fast food restaurant chains such as Nordsee – known for its sandwiches and fish dishes, Dunkin ‘Donuts and Starbucks for fast food, or the oriental and Tex-Mex restaurants as Maredo.
