May: time for Cinema in Stuttgart and Oberhausen

The 18th edition of the International Festival of Animated Film (Internationales Trickfilm-Festival Stuttgart), will be inaugurated in Stuttgart on May 3, while in Oberhausen, 30 kilometers north of Düsseldorf, there will be the 57th edition of the International Short Film Festival (Internationale Kurzfilmtage Oberhausen).

The beginning of May in Germany is a time for great international cinema, with two major events. The first is in Stuttgart – from May 3 to 8, the Festival of Animated Film, which is attended by hundreds of artists, production companies, distributors and international sales companies.

The festival includes a series of competitions with prizes for a total of 50 000 €. Considerable space is given especially to the young talents who will debut at the event. The Internationales Trickfilm-Festival is considered one of the most prestigious international events for the animated film sector.

From May 5 to 10, almost simultaneously with Stuttgart, in Oberhausen short film will be the protagonist instead. There will be the 57th edition of the Internationale Kurzfilmtage Oberhausen, an event where various works will be presented, from documentary film to nature documentaries, from video-essays to artist’s videos and silent films.

Short film is still the prime source of innovation for cinema and the International Short Film Festival has been a catalyst and a great showcase for more than 50 years, animating the artistic panorama. Every year, more than 6 000 short films are presented, 500 of which are in competition. Many directors have presented their early works at Oberhausen and now have become icons in the world of cinema – like Roman Polanski and George Lucas.
