Useful hints and tips for travelers in Germany
From October 24 to 27, the halls of Essen Fair will host one of the most awaited events by both adults and children across Europe. It’s time for Spiel, an exhibition dedicated to the world of games. The Internationale Spieltage takes place at Messe Essen in the Rüttenscheid district, in the southern part of the city, Germany.
Spiel is an annual exhibition dedicated to games and toys of all kinds, where publishers, producers and professionals come together to share experiences and catch up on the latest trends about games, from the most traditional up to the most technological. What makes this event particularly exciting, though, is the fact that unlike the other major German exhibition for games, Nuremberg’s Nürnberger Spielwarenmesse, Spiel is also open to consumers, not only to insiders.
In short, Spiel is a trade show for everyone, where everyone can find a place to have fun and try and test more or less demanding games. The fair is now in its 30th edition and is a very important appointment for such a highly productive and amusing industry. Numbers are perfectly able to explain the proportions of this event. Spiel is visited by nearly 200,000 people each year and covers an area of Messe Essen equal to nearly 50 thousand square meters. More than 800 exhibitors are expected from 34 different countries.
A large section of the exhibition is devoted to comics. Comic Action, taking place as part of Spiel, provides an extensive overview of both the German and the international comic markets. Publishers will present their products, famous illustrators will showcase and sign their work, trade associations and professional journals will present themselves. And collectors will be crazy about the large second-hand comic store. Visitors will find their favorite artwork, posters, prints, t-shirts, action-figures and everything related to the comic scene.
Finally, during the event numerous events will be organized to entertain the whole family, such as tournaments, competitions, contests, and during the fair, the Deutscher Spiele Preis (“German Prize for games”), International Gamers Awards and Essener Feder prizes will be awarded.
We shouldn’t forget, however, that Spiel is also a meeting point for publishers, producers, creators and industry professionals who meet in order to understand trends and expectations of the general public, as well as look for possible innovation opportunities. Exhibitors consider Spielto be the highlight of the year and a perfect occasion for introducing new products to the market. For anyone else, Spiel in Essen means: four days of fun, meeting friends, playing and testing thousands of games and novelties together with gamers from all over the world.
Spiel will take place Thursday to Saturday, October 24 – 26, from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m., on Sunday, October 27, from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. One-Day Tickets cost 11,50 EUR for adults and 6,50 EUR for children under 12.
